Canada Part I

Our vacation this summer was to Canada, yes the glorious 13 hour drive with two beautiful children! I am just so glad that our kids do pretty well in the car. Erik's max is about 6 hours and then he is pushing both hands out through the belts trying to escape while yelling, "I want out!" This is why we split up our drive.

We left Monday evening at 7:00 pm and drove to Idaho the first night. We thought that the kids would just fall asleep and we could just scoop them up and put them in the hotel room. Bria- yes, Erik- no. It was 10:30 and we were trying to find a hotel while Erik was clapping at the end of every song on the cd. We had put on quiet primary songs to help calm the kids down, but Erik was just singing along and having a grand old time! We finally drove into a hotel at 11:00 and Erik was WIDE awake. We kept telling him, "Night night" and he would pretend to fall asleep, but within 10 seconds, he shot right back up with big eyes and his cute smile. When we got into the hotel, he was so excited and couldn't sleep because we were somewhere new! Bria was out cold and never woke up until morning. She got out of bed and asked, "What is this house?" and "How come this house doesn't have a kitchen?" It was so funny!

So then, off we were to Canada. Nine more hours to go! Yey! It was great the first 6 hours and then Erik had it. He wanted out. We pulled into Shelby, only 30 minutes away from the border of Canada, to get some dinner. We were actually in the mood for hamburgers and we couldn't find a single hamburger place! This place was definetely bare! The only place there was to eat was Pizza Hut, probably our least favorite restaurant (well besides McDonald's) on the planet. Well, we were very hungry, so we ate there anyway. Erik was blowing on all the light bulbs to cool them off and in the process spit on our food. He kept pointing to all the light bulbs and saying, "Hot!" and then he would blow on them. Silly kid.

We got to the border without any problems and headed to Derek's Grandma's house in Taber. We stayed there the first two nights and just hung out with Derek's immediate family. When we got there, the kids were literally jumping off the walls. They were so excited to get out of the car and especially excited to get ice cream sprinkled with fresh raspberries just picked from Grandma's backyard. MMMM! My favorite dessert ever. Bria was so excited to be in Canada. She LOVED being at Great Grandma Anderson's. She absolutely loves her grandma's and she especially loved staying at Grandma's in Canada. She was not too excited to leave. I thought that was so precious. She is so easily pleased.

The family reunion was in Waterton, so on our way, we stopped at Head smashed in buffalo jump. It was a historical museum that depicted the Indians and their way of hunting. The Indians would lead the buffalo to the edge of a cliff and chase them right off it and that is how they killed the buffalo. It was very interesting and the kids had a good time running around the museum.

That night we went to the lodge we were all staying in and ate dinner. We had a fun night visiting with cousins, Aunts and Uncles. The kids had a blast running around the lodge and finding little friends to play with. It was a really fun place.

I wish sometimes my family did family reunions when do you ever just call all these people up and say lets get together. Especially when some of your travel for 13 hours. I can totally see how it would be weird to wake up in a new place with no kitchen - this can't be home. Through the eyes of a child. She is so sweet. How was that spit pizza? So it must have been one of those old school Pizza Hut restaurants, man I haven't seen on of those for years and years but I would take that over McDonald's any day of the week. How long did it take you to get Erik to sleep that night? Kyle freaked out the first night we stopped to, we were watching the fireworks and he would much rather run up and down the room bashing into the window where we were watching the show and of course we stopped that fast because knowing Kyle he would have been though the window before we had time to react which would have been a really bad thing here since we were like 8 stories up, there's no surviving from that fall. I am so glad that you guys had fun and got to be together!! Sure miss you all and our long chats, the days are just so slow. Love you!!
